“Simplicity”
Rev. Benjamin Wines

Today is the twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost. Rev. Benjamin Wines will bring the message, “Simplicity”. Our Scripture passage comes from Luke 12:13-21 and our Call to Worship comes from Psalm 49. We look forward to joining you in this time of Worship.

Call to Worship (from Psalm 49)
Leader: Hear this, all you peoples;
People: Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
Leader: Both low and high,
People: Rich and poor together.
Leader: Why should I fear in times of trouble,
People: When the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me,
Leader: Those who trust in their wealth
People: And boast of the abundance of their riches?
Leader: Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life,
People: There is no price one can give to God for it.
Leader: For the ransom of life is costly,
People: And can never suffice,
Leader: That one should live on forever
People: And never see the grave.
Leader: Mortals cannot abide in their pomp;
People: They are like the animals that perish.

Questions for Further Reflection:
In this passage, Jesus reminds us all that our possessions can quickly become idols.
How does living a simple, disciplined life prevent idolatry?
How do we keep the focus of our simplicity on God?
