To My Hope Valley Baptist Family

My Hope Valley Baptist Family,

I sincerely want to thank you one more time, from the bottom of my heart, for all you have meant to me. I have had the privilege of both learning and serving here at Hope Valley Baptist, and I am thankful for the ways in which I have seen God at work in my life, the lives of our teens, and the life of this church. Thank you so much for the hospitality you’ve shown me and for the very kind and gracious send-off you gave me on my last Sunday. I am so grateful.

I will be praying for you, and I hope that you will pray for me. Let us seek God’s Kingdom first, and His righteousness, knowing that He will care for our every need. May the Lord be with you, bless you, and keep you.

In Christ,

Chase Thompson

Grace and Peace!

This Sunday the Youth are hosting a Bake Sale.  If you have a baked good (or goods) that you’d be willing to donate, we would greatly appreciate it! Also, we hope you’ll bring an appetite for the Bake Sale! This church has always supported our Youth Bake Sales and I can’t thank you enough.

Also, Friday, May 3rd the Youth are hosting the 2nd Annual Pancake Dinner and Talent Show! Tickets are on sale now; you can see any of our Youth or myself to purchase one. Tickets are $7 per person, $5 per child (ages 10 and under). We had a blast last year and look forward to enjoying this fun event once again! Please see Amy Sauls, Shonna Wood, or myself if you would like to sign up to perform in the Talent Show.

All of the funds that we raise will go toward our Youth Missions and Activities Fund for things like our upcoming Passport Mission Camp, events like the Lock-In as well as our upcoming summer events, outreach opportunities, and Youth ministry needs as they arise. Again, I can’t thank this church enough for your support of our Youth ministry. Our teenagers are growing up in a world that increasingly denies the message of the Gospel. I pray that through our Youth ministry, this church would be able to show young people the love of Christ, teaching them that Jesus is Lord and that through our witness teenagers would be able to find their value as a human being, loved by God, rooted in Jesus Christ.

Our Youth are finishing up their study of the Book of Acts, and on Sunday we read about Paul’s departure to Jerusalem in Acts 20-21. In moments like these we see what I’ve hoped we would see in Acts: how our story intersects with and continues the story of the early Christians. Paul was brokenhearted to leave his brothers and sisters in Christ, and yet he knew that God was leading him to Jerusalem.  Similarly I’ll soon be leaving, and I am going to miss all of you! I think it’s important to recognize, however, that for years and years and years the Creator has been at work in His Church and in the world. That being said, when I leave God will continue to be God. And God will continue to be at work in the Youth ministry of Hope Valley Baptist Church, so long as you remain faithful. My ministry hasn’t been and will never be anything new or special, only an attempt to be faithful to what Scripture commissions us all to do. I am merely someone who has been transformed by the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ, and I have tried to take that seriously. I pray you all will take His Lordship seriously too.

So let us continue to work and serve together! And when the Holy Spirit leads us out into the world, let us faithfully follow Him wherever He would lead us to go, even if sometimes it may seem difficult or sorrowful, for God is with us! He is faithful to uphold us. May the Lord be with you, sustain you, and keep you.

In Christ,

Chase Thompson

Grace and Peace!

The Youth Lock-In is this Friday April 12th from 7pm until Saturday at 9am. Youth, it’s time to get excited! Everyone in middle school and high school is welcome, so bring friends! Teens that are attending need to bring their medical release forms and at least $10 (we will be bowling, which will only cost $10, but we’ll also be stopping to buy snacks for the long night!). We’re going to be up all night having an exhaustingly fun time, so rest up and get geared up! It’s important to note that the deadline for Passport deposits has passed, but it’s not too late! Deposits are $50.00; please turn them in to me this Sunday or earlier. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Passport is July 8th – 13th and will be a great opportunity for our Youth to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ as they worship their Lord and serve Him by serving His people. We are grateful for this opportunity for our teens! We’re hoping that as many teens as possible can go.

The Youth will also be having a Bake Sale after Sunday morning service on Sunday, April 28th. We truly appreciate any baked goods that you can contribute. And finally, as early as May, the Youth will be hosting our 2nd Annual Pancake Dinner and Talent Show! The Pancake Dinner and Talent Show was a great time of fellowship last year and is back by popular demand. We hope you’ll share your talents this year and that you’ll come and enjoy the talents of your church family! Meal tickets will be $7 per person, $5 per child (ages 10 and under) and donations are accepted. The exact date will be announced soon. All proceeds from both of these fundraisers will go toward Youth activities.

Finally, as many of you have heard by now, I will be returning home to Kentucky after graduation. My last official Sunday with the church will be May 5th, 2013. I cannot begin to describe how wonderful my time has been here, though I will attempt to put it into words before I leave. The decision to go home is not an easy one at all, but it is what God has called me to do. I am so excited about what God is doing in this church and in our Youth group! I’m excited to say that I’ve been working closely with the Youth Council to plan for the next steps of this transition, and I have become confident that this summer will be even better than the last. I only wish I could be a part of it as the youth of this church have become so very near to my heart. I love and will miss you all! God would not call us to act if it were not His will. While I desire to stay, it would only prevent the church from God’s best – and so while I will grieve leaving all of you, I look forward to what God will do for His Kingdom in the future (both at Hope Valley Baptist Church and in my life).

May the Lord bless you and keep you! I look forward to continuing to serve God alongside all of you with all of my heart in the coming weeks.

In Christ,

Chase Thompson

Thank you and looking forward!

I want to thank everyone again for your support of our Youth Ministry. Our Yard Sale greatly helped us in fundraising for Passport this summer. If you contributed in any way, thank you! We had a lot of people who supplied donations for the sale and many came by to make purchases. We also had a lot of people who helped through volunteering. This Yard Sale wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, thank you for what you did!

The Youth Lock-In will be Friday, April 12th at 7 pm – April 13th at 9 am. Youth are encouraged to bring their middle school and high school aged friends! If you are interested in helping with the Lock-In or if you have questions, please contact me. It’s going to be a fun night that all will enjoy.

On Saturday morning, the Youth will be performing a brief presentation of the Easter story at the Easter Egg Hunt. Youth should arrive at the church at 9:30am. Also, Saturday at 6pm the Youth will be having their own Easter Egg Hunt. We will be serving dinner.

In our Young Adults’ Sunday School class, we’re currently going through the Epistle to the Romans. If you’re looking for a Sunday School class to attend, we invite you to come and be with us!

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

In Christ,

Chase

Youth & Young Adult Opportunities

I want to thank all of you who helped support our Youth during their 30 Hour Famine this year. With your donations, we more than tripled our goal of $1000.00! I hope to announce a final amount of donations received soon.

Please take note of some important upcoming dates:
Saturday, March 23rd, the Youth are planning a Yard Sale here at the church. All money raised will go toward our upcoming Passport Summer Missions Camp. Those of you wishing to donate items may drop those off at the church Thursday – Friday, March 21st and 22nd. Any good condition donations will be very much appreciated. If you’re looking for an opportunity to serve, we also need volunteers! See either Melissa Love or myself to find out what you can do to help our Youth get to Passport.

Sunday, March 24th is the deadline for Youth to register for Passport. The deposit amount for registration is $50.00. The total cost of the camp will be $333, but we expect to cover most of the cost with fundraisers. We need to know how many we will be taking this year!

Friday at 7pm – Saturday at 9am, April 12th – 13th, the Youth will be having a Lock-In at the church. Youth are encouraged to invite their middle and high school aged friends for what will be an incredibly fun night!

I am thankful for the beginning of our college/grad-school aged dinner group. I’ve really enjoyed our conversation and Bible study together and am looking forward to our continued fellowship. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the McAlister’s off of 15-501 (at 5318 New Hope Commons Drive) from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m., and we invite any young adults looking for a casual Bible study to join us.

May God bless you and keep you!

In Christ,
Chase

30 Hour Famine

Our Youth are currently raising funds for this year’s 30 Hour Famine, which will take place on the evening of Wednesday, March 6th – the morning of Friday, March 8th. This year’s Famine will be quite a bit different than what we’ve done in the past. This year, instead of staying together and having the encouragement of one another, the Youth will be fasting for 30 hours on their own time – while at school, while at home, etc. In this way, they will experience hunger in the way that children across the world experience hunger – in the midst of everyday life. Needless to say, seeing others eat, being isolated in their fast, and having to deal with the ordinary demands of life will guarantee a difficult Famine for our teens. I ask for you to pray for them.

I also ask that you would contribute to this cause. Our teens are not going without food for 30 hours for fun or to be silly; but rather they are seeking, through their fast, to raise money to feed children who are starving to death. Through World Vision, our donations go a long way. ONE DOLLAR feeds a child for an entire day. The efforts of our Famine don’t just amount to a “food drop” either. World Vision uses these funds to establish ways for families to farm efficiently – with the goal of ending the problem of hunger. As the old saying goes, “give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” I personally am committing to give at least $60.00 to this cause ($60.00 which will not be deducted from my tithe). I ask you to consider giving whatever it is that God puts on your heart. Whether that’s $60.00, or $30.00, or $10.00, whatever you can give will make a difference.

You can donate online at www.30hourfamine.org, click on donate and search for the “Hope Valley Baptist Church” famine group. You can pick a particular individual’s effort to support, or donate to our group as a whole. Also, many of our Youth have donation envelopes and are taking up “offline” donations, so if you’d like to donate in person you may feel free to do that as well – receipts are available. (Here is a direct link)

I appreciate our Youth and their commitment to doing the work of Christ. We are limited in what we can do during the school semester. I was recently reflecting back on this past summer and tears filled my eyes as I recalled how committed our Youth were to doing the work of the Kingdom – volunteering at Durham Rescue Mission, Urban Ministries of Durham, Spring Arbor Assisted Living Community, and going to the Deep Impact Mission-
Camp where they did some hard, hot work. Our teens worked in the Durham community two times every week, on top of the Mission Camp, VBS (training, music camp, and the event itself), and regular worship and Bible study. This 30 Hour Famine is one of the ways that we are seeking to continue Christ’s work while in school. We need your donations and prayers.

Thank you and may the Lord be with you!
In Christ,
Chase

I am so blessed to be able to see and take part in all of the wonderful things our Youth group is doing. Our time is limited during the academic year, but when the summer ended we decided to be resolute in consistently continuing our ministry of spreading the love and joy of Christ with the residents at the Spring Arbor Assisted Living community. I am thankful for a place so close by that gives our Youth the chance to do the work of God’s people.

The Youth will also soon be beginning to raise funds for the 30 Hour Famine. These funds go to feed starving children across the world. As many of you know, the 30 Hour Famine involves our own Youth going without food for a period of 30 hours in order to raise these funds. Not only does the Famine raise funds, it also raises awareness about those far less fortunate than us whom God has called us to help and to feed. This year the Youth will start their 30 hours on Wednesday, March 6th.

On Sunday nights we’re studying the Book of Acts, learning how we are to live faithfully into our Christian story today and in this place, just as the first followers of Jesus did in their own context. On Sunday mornings in the Young Adults’ Sunday School class, we’ve finished our “sweep” of the Old Testament, and will be beginning the Letter to the Romans this Sunday.  If you’re looking for a Sunday School class, we invite you to join us!

Finally, the Youth will be having a Lock-In soon and are encouraged to invite their friends! Details forthcoming…

May the Lord be with you and keep you!

Chase

I want to thank everyone for praying for and supporting our Youth Winter Retreat this year. The folks at the FFA Camp in North Myrtle Beach were incredible hosts, and the Lord faithfully met us there. Please continue to pray for our Youth as we seek to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.

I also want to thank everyone for the privilege of preaching this past Sunday. As you know I was not well, so I appreciate everyone’s patience with me through a hoarse sermon, as well as everyone’s encouragement and prayers. God is indeed leading this church in the work of His Kingdom, and I pray that we would all faithfully follow Him wherever He would have us to go. Let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God.

In Youth, we are continuing our study of the book of Acts, and in our Young Adults’ Sunday School class we are continuing our “sweep” through the Old Testament before we begin our study of Romans. Also, for those who met up with us for our college aged/young adult lunch (as well as any who wanted to come but couldn’t), we talked that day about beginning a weekly get together where we prayed and read Scripture over dinner. I will be contacting you soon with more details and to set up a time where we would be able to do that.

May the Lord be with you!

Chase

Youth & Young Adults…

Grace and Peace!

This Saturday the Youth will be leaving for their Winter Retreat. We will return on  Monday. We do ask that you pray for us – that this Retreat will be a time of reflection and growth as we ask God to increase our faith and as we seek to become more committed as disciples of Jesus.

Just as a reminder, our trip to Passport SuPassportmmer Camp will be July 8th – 13th. Youth and Youth parents, mark your calendars!

In our Young Adults’ Sunday School class, we are seeking to do a broad sweep of the Old Testament before we begin our study of Romans. While we certainly acknowledge that a “broad sweep” could not possibly cover the depth of the entire Old Testament, we are still excited about what we can learn that will inform our own individual (and more exhaustive) reading of the Old Testament. If you’re looking for a Sunday School class, we invite you join us!

May the Lord be with you!

Youth & Young Adults Notes

Grace and Peace!

If your teen is planning on attending our Youth Winter Retreat on January 19-21st, this Sunday is the absolute last day to let me know. The cost is $85. If you haven’t yet paid but have told me that your Youth is attending, make sure to double-check that you’ve told me (even if you’re positive that you’ve told me, make sure to tell me again!).

In Youth, we are currently studying the Book of Acts. We are reading about the birth of the Church and, thus, the beginning of our own story. The early Christians were devoted to the apostles’ teaching, to worship, to prayer, and to the fellowship of the Church. As Christians, we are seeking to live into that story as its present day “characters.”

Over the next few weeks in our Young Adults’ Sunday School class, we will be sweeping through some highlights in the Old Testament. Then, we will be beginning Romans. If you’re looking for a Sunday School class, I invite you to join us in Bible Study.

I trust everyone had a Merry Christmas. Happy New Year!

May the Lord be with you!

In Christ,

Chase
