More About HVBC

Our Baptist Beliefs

GOD is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator of the universe. He is revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

FAITH is not present in people at birth. They come to it by choosing to accept Christ.

BAPTISM is a symbol of rebirth in Christ. We baptize believers by immersion.

SALVATION is needed by all people. It is possible only through personal commitment to Christ.

THE BIBLE is the living Word of God, the sole authority. It constitutes the norm for faith and practice.

THE CHURCH is the Body of Christ. The Universal Church consists of all Christians. A local church is a fellowship of believers serving Christ, with allegiance to Him only.

Our core values

  • We value striving to be like Jesus Christ in all areas of our lives.
  • We value knowing God and using the Bible as our guide for living.
  • We value the presence and working of the Holy Spirit in our lives and within our church.
  • We value being a missions-minded church both locally and globally.
  • We value being a loving intergenerational Christian community.
  • We value authentic and creative worship, both traditional and contemporary.
  • We value prayer, both individual and corporate.
  • We value good stewardship, handling well that with which God has entrusted us.
  • We value small groups and Sunday School classes as a way to grow spiritually and connect with others on a deeper level.
  • We value excellence; we desire to give God our best in everything that we do.

Missions @ HVBC

Our church mission is to provide opportunities for all people to become aware that Christ is Savior and Lord.

Our church seeks to involve all church members in mission action, direct evangelism, mission study, mission giving, and mission going.

We financially support the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Southern Baptist Convention and other groups through regular giving and through special offerings. We also support programs of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention and the Yates Baptist Association.

The church participates in mission trips, Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Crop Walk; provides fuel and food for the needy; provides aid to the Durham Rescue Mission; collects toys for the Christmas Toy Store, and many other worthwhile programs.

Visits and contacts with prospective members and those in need are regularly made by the church staff, the Deacons, Sunday School leaders, and individuals.

We conduct organized mission groups for all ages, including Youth on Mission (grades 7-12), Royal Ambassadors (Grades 1-6), Girls in Action (Grades 1-6) and Mission Friends (ages 2-5).

Ministries @ HVBC

Bible Study/Sunday School

An important ministry at Hope Valley Baptist is Sunday School.  We have classes available for all ages from newborns to the oldest Senior Adults.

Sunday School is a time to learn the Bible and how to better live the Christian life.  It is a time to meet in a small group with other people who want to know more about Christianity and how to live as a Christian.

Some classes are more discussion oriented while some are more lecture based.  A fear that some have of Sunday School is that you will have to read or be put on the spot.  That is not the way we have Sunday School at Hope Valley.

The classes build community and many have socials activities or join together for mission projects.  We hope you will join us for Sunday School!

Sunday School Classes at Hope Valley Baptist Church include:

Graded Sunday School classes that meet at 9:45 a.m. Sunday mornings are provided for all ages. ETC is provided during the worship service for infants through age five.

Mission Friends (for children ages two through five), Royal Ambassadors (for boys grades one through six) and Girls in Action (for girls in grades one through six) meet Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. during the school year.

Vacation Bible School is something that all of our children look forward to each summer. We also sponsor other seasonal activities.

  • Preschool Sunday School - We have four preschool Sunday School classes which meet in the hallway behind the sanctuary.  When you bring your preschooler to Sunday School you are to first register at the desk as you enter the educational building.  Pagers are available upon request.  Each class has teachers that are prepared to meet your child and teach them in an age appropriate fashion about the love of Jesus Christ.
    • The Infant Class - Lead Teacher – Lori Kyles Assistants – Susan Bonilla & Jenny Deese
    • The Toddlers - Teachers – Sean & Pam DeZurik and Amy & Candace Tippett
    • Preschoolers - Teachers - Greg & Shonna Wood
    • Pre K/Kindergarten - Teachers - Wanda Horton & Kris Jones

School Age Sunday School - School age children & youth meet upstairs in the Family Life Center

  • 1st - 3rd Graders - We are working through a wonderful “Hands-on Bible” curriculum.  We have studied God’s creation & are now looking at and learning from Old Testament Leaders of Faith, then we’ll study prayer.  We intersperse lots of fun activities with Bible learning and hands on activities.

Teachers – Chris & Faye Williamson, Margaret Thomas, & Anne Braswell

  • 4th - 6th Graders - The pre-adolescent years can be difficult to navigate, so in Sunday School we tackle relevant issues faced by our students in Grades 4 through 6. We provide opportunities for students to learn from the Bible, be creative, and build relationships with friends. Our prayer is that each child will grow and desire a personal relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ. And our curriculum this year, “HANDS-ON BIBLE”, is just that -- hands-on! Kids dive in and get involved, learning as they explore and engage. The teachers use fun, real-world objects (just as Jesus did) to teach Bible truths, drawing kids into God’s Word and closer to Jesus. We meet upstairs in the Family Life Center.
Teachers – Teresa Robson, Wendy Bowling, Ritchie O’Briant, Barbara Sanders & Joi Whittington
  • HVBC Youth - Grades 7 - 12. Hope Valley Baptist Church is committed to the spiritual growth of young people. Youth participate in weekly gatherings for fellowship, Bible study, and ministry. Activities such as parties, retreats, mission trips, etc. are planned throughout the year to aid our young people in their spiritual growth, to reach out to other young people, and to build trust and friendship within the youth group.

One of the main goals of our youth ministry is to lead young people to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, and to live an abundant life through Him.

Teacher – Brent Epps

WEEKLY YOUTH ACTIVITIES

    • Bible Study - Sunday, 9:45 a.m.
    • Youth ReCreation - Sunday, 7:00 p.m.
    • Youth on Mission - Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.

Adult Sunday School Classes - We have nine adult Sunday School classes.  This includes:  five co-ed classes, three women’s classes and one men’s class.  The classes have a rough age division, but we encourage individuals to go where they fit best.  There are different curriculum:  Lifeway, Smyth & Helwyss and different books.  Some classes are more discussion based, while others are more lecture based.  We encourage you to try out different classes until you find the one that best fits you.

  • Truth Class - The Truth Class is well suited for all ages with students ranging from teens to mid-fifties.  The purpose of our class is to pursue God's Truth through His Word, prayer, worship and His son, Jesus Christ under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
    Teacher – Jamie Warren
  • Challengers - a discussion-based class that focuses heavily on practical applications of the Bible. Lessons are often designed to address tough issues that Christians face in today's world. The discussions often challenge participants to assess where they are in their Christian walks and answer the question, “So what should I do differently to be a stronger beacon for Christ as a result of reading these Scriptures?” The group is currently comprised of married couples with infants and/or young children. Given this makeup, a few lessons during the year focus on issues that are common among married Christians raising young families.
Teachers – Jonathan Sauls & Dawayne Whittington
  • The Pairs & Spares is comprised of single adults and couples, some without children, some with small children, some with teens and some with adult children. We study God’s word together in a variety of formats including Topical Adult Bible Studies and Christian book studies. The primary focus is Christian discipleship through study of God’s word, support of one another, regular fellowship, and mission activity.
    Teacher – Sally Atwater
Assistance – Nancy Tyler & Toby Bowen
  • The Covenant Class is a Bible study group that is diverse in age (40+ to 70+ year olds) and background, but similar in our love for God and for each other.   We use the LifeTruths study guide to learn about the Bible and apply its lessons to our lives. The model for learning is interactive, with the teacher asking the class members questions to facilitate discussion.  The class takes up a regular small offering to support various church and mission activities.  At times, we meet outside of Sunday School for fellowship. Visitors and new members are welcome!
    Teacher – David Steffens
    Assistant – Michelle Hunt
  • The Modern Disciples is an interactive discussion-based Bible study group.  The class uses the Advanced Bible Study as a guide to everyday life.  The group also enjoys regular times of Christian fellowship and actively supports mission groups both in the church and in the community. The class consists mainly 50 – 60 year olds
    Teacher – Mike Dossett

The Sanctuary Choir provides leadership in worship and through seasonal and other special presentations. A graded choir program is provided for children from age four through youth. There is also an adult hand bell choir.
